WHAT IS LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT? 

Logistics is the term widely used in business for the range of activities associated with the movement, storage and handling of materials. The management of logistics has been revolutionised over the past 30 years and has come to be regarded as a key determinant of business competitiveness. Companies have substantially improved their performance not only by overhauling their internal logistics, but also by managing more effectively their external links with suppliers. This has become known as Supply Chain Management. These developments have created a healthy demand for well-qualified logistics and supply chain managers in most sectors of the economy. 

The importance of logistics is recognized all over the world, and today’ businesses made up of a complex set of product flows, manufacturing processes and distribution channels, requires cross–functional understanding as well as sound technical and managerial skills. Hence, there is a need for skilled logistics professionals to meet the challenges facing both manufacturing and services industries. 

Logistics Management has gained immense popularity and importance in the recent times with the formation of companies in the freight and courier sector throughout the country. The responsibility of the proper delivery of materials from offices to houses and also from factories to customers all across the continents lays with the logistics management companies. This sector has witnessed a significant growth over the years which have made Careers in logistics among the sought after career options for many. Courier companies in India that initially started with delivering letters and packets have now grown and developed into logistic companies with moving containers and global operations.

The Logistics companies actually serve as the backbone for the Supply Chain Management organizations. They function in close association with various shipping enterprises, airline companies and surface carriers. 

Logistics Management is a process wherein information, goods and other resources are managed from their very origin to the supply, thereby fulfilling the needs of the customers. Logistics is therefore all about managing carefully the procurement, transportation, storage and also the distribution of materials and goods. It forms a part of the supply management chain involving the combination of information, inventory, transportation, warehousing, material-handling along with packaging. 

The objective of the programme is to develop the students for challenging career in any industry with logistics and supply chain functions. You can be employed as a logistics specialist, logistics analyst, supply chain analyst, production planner, distribution manager, distribution planner, transportation manager, logistics manager or supply chain manager. 
As more and more responsibility is placed on the Logistics function, the need has intensified for its practitioners to be highly skilled in the various elements of Supply Chain Management and to be completely up to date with best practices in the industry both national and international. Logisticians must take their place alongside engineers and accountants as proficient and exceptionally well-trained professionals.
