SINGAPORE (May 22, 2012): A multi-million-dollar cruise terminal capable of accommodating the world's largest luxury cruise liners will start operating this weekend, officials said Tuesday.

The opening of the Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore will allow the city-state to tap Asia's growing cruise industry, they said, while it will also provide thousands of new jobs.

On Saturday, the S$500 million (US$395 million) terminal will welcome its first ship -- the Royal Caribbean International's 138,000-tonne Voyager of the Seas luxury liner.

With a capacity of 3,840 passengers and 1,176 crew, the vessel will be the largest of its kind to dock in Singapore, terminal operator SATS-Creuers Cruise Services said in a statement.

This will "pave the way for the newer generation of larger cruise liners to dock in Singapore and Asia, including Oasis-Class ships," it said, referring to the world's largest passenger liners.

Situated at the edge of Singapore's waterfront downtown district, the ultra-modern terminal is expected to latch onto the city's booming tourism industry, which benefited from double digit growth in visitor arrivals to 13.2 million last year.

Tourism receipts came in at S$22.3 billion last year, up 18% from 2010.

Singapore's tourism authorities said it received close to one million cruise passengers in 2011, generating S$520 million in direct spending.

"Singapore's strategic location coupled with the terminal's state-of-the-art facilities and proximity to the city and Singapore Changi Airport will anchor the country's position as Asia's leading cruise hub," said Melvin Vu, chief executive of SATS-Creuers Cruise Services.

The terminal will be operated by a joint venture between Singapore Airport Terminal Services and Europe's Creuers del Port de Barcelona.

Singapore's second minister for trade and industry S. Iswaran said during a media tour of the facility on Tuesday the terminal's opening would create 3,000 jobs and other spin-off benefits.

"The hotels also stand to benefit to the extent that we become a turnaround cruise port... where people come to Singapore in order to board the cruise ship or to disembark in Singapore before going home," Iswaran added.

Other cruise operators such as Florida-based Celebrity Cruises and Italy's Costa Cruises are also scheduled to start deploying liners to the city-state in the next two years. – AFP

Singapore remains top convention city in Asia

SINGAPORE - Singapore maintained its position as Asia's top convention city for the 10th consecutive year in the latest rankings by the International Congress and Convention Association, the Singapore Tourism Board said on Tuesday.
It is also the only Asian city in the top five convention cities worldwide alongside Vienna, Barcelona, Paris and Berlin,which took the top four positions.

Singapore welcomed a record 13.2 million visitors last year. Business visitors accounted for 24 percent of the total visitor arrivals in Singapore. Expenditure by these business travelers increased by 4.1 percent to an estimated 5.6 billion Singapore dollars ($4.4 billion) or 25 percent of the total tourism receipts.
The meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE) industry saw a year-on-year growth of 46 percent in the number of conventions, conferences and trade shows held in Singapore last year.
Neeta Lachmandas, assistant chief executive of Singapore Tourism Board said Singapore's success can be attributed to factors such as a vibrant eco-system that nurtures business events of exceptional quality, the dynamic growth in Asia, and the dedication of the industry partners.

"Singapore aims to continue leveraging the growing opportunities in Asia and our strong knowledge network to further strengthen our position as a preferred MICE destination," she said. "Singapore strives to differentiate itself by co-creating and developing a strong network of business events within Singapore's key priority industries.
Madrid and London came in the sixth and seventh positions, respectively, while Amsterdam took the eighth position. Istanbul was ranked the ninth, followed by Beijing in the tenth position.

Singapore employees most motivated among Asians: poll

The Indian student's dream foreign university is usually either from the UK or US. Other countries find it difficult to attract Indian students.

Singapore, however, is trying to position itself as the destination of choice for Indian students. The country wants Indian students to enrol in its institutes, from the higher secondary or the junior college level onwards.

Singapore is basing its pitch on its geographical proximity to India, professional education that provides excellent job opportunities, the business and trade environment of Singapore and its cosmopolitan culture.

The government of Singapore is promoting its various higher secondary colleges and institutions across Indian metros and other large cities. Over three years, the number of Indian students opting for studies in Singapore has surged. One of the reasons has been that more Indian families have been settling in Singapore.

A delegation of Singapore-based educational institutions visited India's educational hub Pune, recently. The group interacted with schools, colleges and a large number of students to promote Singapore as an education hub.

"Singapore is very near to India. Students can reach Indian within six hours. The cost of education and cost of living are at least 30 per cent less than in the UK or US. All this makes Singapore a very attractive destination for Indian students."

Last year, more than 800,000 international students registered themselves with various Singapore schools that provide education in a variety of streams like science, arts, management, tourism and hospitality, information technology and business development.

"Currently, only 4 per cent of overall international students in Singapore are from India, but the number is rising. In another three years, we expect to have more than 10 per cent of international students in Singapore coming from India,"

Indian students studying in Singapore seem to be happy with the education standards. "Travelling to Singapore for education is easy comapred with the UK or US. Visa is a mere formality. My father was not keeping well when I opted for education abroad. The best option was Singapore as I could make frequent visits to my home," said Anant Parekh, a student from Pune, who is enroled in an under graduate management course in Singapore.

Like Anant, Chandrashekhar Khandke, a student from Mumbai is studying in Standard 12th in Singapore. "The syllabus structure and academic systems in Singapore are almost similar to the ones followed by Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) in India. Hence, Indian students easily adjust to studies in Singapore. After passing out of Std 12th, one can opt for a Bachelor's degree in vocational subjects like tourism development or hospitality management," Chandrashekar said.

Hyderabad-based Nita Joseph, who took an admission last year for Std 11 science stream, added, "Singapore is a nice city to live and study. The best aspect is, absence of racism, which still exists in European cities. I am enjoying studying here."

Indian educational establishments like Delhi Public ScAhool, Bhavan's Global Indian International School and SP Jain Institute of Management have also set up campuses in Singapore.

The cost of living and tuitions fees in Singapore are lower than in the UK or US.: "A students needs to spend around Rs 5 lakh for Std 11th and Std 12th studies in Singapore. The Singapore government provides excellent infrastructure and public administration services, which becomes an added advantage for international students. Big spenders travel to Singapore

Singapore’s move to encourage visitors to spend more is paying off as recent figures reveal the total spending amount is    exceeding the growth of visitor arrival numbers. Giving that the tourist numbers increased by less than 13 percent indicates that the visitors who travelled to the Island are spending up big during their visit.

Not surprisingly, 60 percent of this money is spent on shopping, accommodation, sightseeing, entertainment and gaming.

 National Association of Travel Agents Singapore (Natas) chief executive Robert Khoo said it is a sensible approach to market Singapore as a destination for those with money to burn, when looking at the Islands “physical constraints”.

“There’s a limit, for instance, to how many more hotels we can build or how many more tours we can run or how many more tour coaches we can have on our roads,” Mr Khoo said.

Mr Khoo explained that these limitations separate Singapore from surrounding larger countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

According to the Singapore Tourism Board tourists who visited the Island in 2011 spent S$22.3billion, up 18 percent from the year before, Jakarta Globe reported. “They have plenty of land to keep building and building, so for them, it’s about driving the number of visitors up.”

In 2011 the hotel occupancy rate reached 86 percent and the average room rate was S$245 a night, up 13 percent from the previous year.

Additionally, STB also underlined key hotel developments, stating that hotels had a prosperous year, achieving S$2.6 billion in room revenue, up 28 percent from 2010.
